SCOTLAND NECK – In a quiet secluded place, where a thriving hog operation once functioned, is the home of Down East Animal Refuge.
From a distance you can hear pups barking and playing in their newfound paradise, away from speeding vehicles, garbage dumps, and lonely country roads. These animals are survivors with an opportunity to experience the love of a family in a safe haven with proper food and medical care thanks to the volunteers of Down East Animal Refuge and donations made to the facility by “friends of DEAR.”
DEAR invites the public to join the organization in a day of fun at the “Greater Roanoke Rover Boat Race” on Saturday, June 18th, at the Roanoke River Bridge on Hwy 258 North (approximately three miles north of Scotland Neck).
A catfish lunch will be served with all the trimmings for a 46 donation per person. What is all the “hoopla” about? Racing little boats (round numbered little wooden balsam boats) down the Roanoke River at $5 per donation to win prizes (money) for the top three winners and to fund the needs for food and medical care for the animals in the care of DEAR. The amount of $80 – $100 will pay to have a pup neutered or spayed and additional funds will pay for rabies shots and immunizations or treat a pup with medical issues.
DEAR is also a proud sponsor of “A New Leash on Life,” a program in conjunction with the North Carolina Prison Systems and Caledonia Prison. The rescued pups are nursed to good health, and then go into an eight week obedience program at Caledonia Prison before being adopted.
